What We Love

We've always believed that coffees from the Charbanta area have the potential to be among the finest Ethiopian offerings, and this year's selection affirms that belief. The pure clarity of flavor is astounding, paired with striking acidity and sweetness that promises an exceedingly delightful experience. In the cup, you'll encounter the effervescent acidity of limeade, complemented by juicy, sugary notes of peach rings. These flavors are followed by layers of botanical-floral tones that linger long after the final sip.

About the Coffee

Nearly a decade ago, Caleb Nicholes, one of the founders of Wonderstate, embarked on a journey to Ethiopia in search of exceptional coffee from the remote regions of Yirgacheffe. This quest led him to the village of Charbanta, nestled at some of the highest altitudes in the area. Since that initial trip, We've been dedicated to bringing these extraordinary coffees back to Viroqua and sharing them with you.

This year, with the support of our friends at SNAP PLC, we procured coffee from Charbanta that showcases the pinnacle of Ethiopian washed coffees. Remarkably, this coffee was processed using the standard washed method, highlighting the unique terroir, or taste of place, of Charbanta. This achievement is largely due to organic production methods combined with Ethiopia's highest altitudes, ranging from 2200 to 2400 meters. The result is a coffee that perfectly captures the essence of why Ethiopian coffees are so celebrated: their unparalleled ability to express floral aromas, citrus, and stone fruit flavors, all wrapped in a refined sugary-sweetness.

About the Producer

Wonderstate Coffee has partnered with SNAP PLC, a leading Ethiopian exporter, for several harvest cycles to source outstanding coffees. SNAP owns multiple washing stations throughout Ethiopia, including the esteemed Chelbessa Danche, renowned for producing some of the country's finest coffees. This year, we collaborated with SNAP ahead of the harvest to secure coffee from Charbanta, a region introduced to our founder, Caleb Nicholes, nearly a decade ago. The result is a coffee that might have otherwise remained undiscovered. This selection from Charbanta captures the essence of washed-Ethiopian coffee, delivering refined sugary-sweetness, exceptional lime-like acidity, and complex floral-botanical flavors in the finish.
